I find e-mail can be misunderstood at times so occasionally use a simple smiley face when I want to make sure the reader does not take what I wrote the wrong way. I do agree it can come across as unprofessional and limit it to between co-workers, since I have not found a better way to lighten the tone. Sometimes I know my message just won't work by e-mail so I pick up the phone or drop by the person's desk. You can't beat face-to-face contact.
