Any More and Anymore

Is anymore written as one word or two? It depends on how you’re using it. We’re here to set the record straight.

Any more and anymore have similar meanings, but they are not interchangeable. Whether or not you make anymore one word or two will always depend on how you’re using it. Any more refers to quantities (Can I get you any more coffee?). Anymore is an adverb referring to time (I don’t drink coffee anymore.).

A Detailed Explanation of Any More and Anymore:

When spelled using two words, any more refers to quantities.

Example Are there any more brownies?

Example You already ate five; you don’t need any more !

When spelled as only one word, anymore is an adverb referring to time. It

means “at present,” or “any longer.”

Example      Why doesn’t Mom bake brownies anymore ?

Example      She doesn’t bake brownies anymore because you always eat them all and don’t leave any for anyone!

In particular dialects, some speakers use anymore as a synonym for nowadays.

Example Brownies are almost impossible to come by around here anymore.

However, this usage isn’t considered satisfactory in formal writing. In fact, it’s a reasonably rare usage, so you may want to remove it from your writing altogether unless you’re writing for a particular audience.

The problem with anymore is the exact problem many writers have with words like “anytime”, “anyway”, and “sometime”—they can all be written as either one or two words.

Remember: If you’re talking about the quantity of something, use any more. When you’re talking about time, use anymore
